moleskinny

a while ago, i got a small moleskine sketchbook for the first time.
the thick papers that don't let mediums permeate,
spreads that fall completely flat for better drawing and scanning...
nice! i understand the popularity now.

my other usual sketchbook is from muji and is very see through,
which can be nice too, but limits the mediums i can experiment with.
i look forward to getting a bigger moleskine and painting away.

below are some pages from the past few weeks in between painting.
(i've been very into black & blue.)

PS: also, i unlocked my twitter.

[edit : sketches done mostly with ballpoint pen, colored pencil & ink.]

  2. What types of pens are you partial to, when it comes to sketching in your moleskin?
Most of the time I stick with microns, but I love the look of your pages, and was just curious what types of writing mediums you used to acquire the look.
    Thanks,
    Hanna

  4. thank you!

hanna - i've found out that i prefer the texture of the ballpoint pen against the moleskine paper.
up there is just a regular old bic ballpoint, except for the first two spreads, which were pencil, then micron pen, with gold marker & ink.

i like micron pens better on my thin muji sketchbook paper. :)

  5. I had a tiny tine hard paged one, and then I bought a bigger one for a trip, and turns out I bought one of those thin see through page ones... my disappointment was great, but I kind of like having MOAR paper now... Cause it has more, right?

Love the repeated patterns on the first sketchbook drawing!

  6. Wow that is really impressive that you can obtain that look with just a simple bic ballpoint pen. I really love your style, thanks for replying.

  7. I love them, Stella! The first one is gorgeous, she looks like a lioness, and the one with the girl with her face down, OMG, so heartbreaking. You captured her so well with the black, I got teary. I know where that dark place is. I like the last one, too, it almost looks like the smaller faces are her memory pieces...
Wow, Stella, you have so much power to tell stories through your paintings and it's a rare talent! So proud of you and can't wait to see more!

  11. I love your sketches! What do you think is the best way to learn how to draw faces. I always have a hard time drawing them.
